REA’s New Strategic Plan

REA has developed a new strategic plan for the period 2016/17-2020/21.

The Authority will thereafter undertake the electrification of the remaining public and households to facilitate the achievement of the Government target of universal access by 2020

   The strategic objectives to be achieved under this plan are to:
  ·    Develop and promote renewable energy sources;
  ·    Increase electricity connectivity;
  ·    Establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders;
  ·    Strengthen institutional capacity development; and
  ·    Achieve financial sustainability.

  Under this strategic plan, REA plans to put more focus on renewable energy for   electrification of off-grid areas and households that are far away from the grid. Initially, REA is currently setting up 25 Solar Mini grids in 5 Counties that include Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera and Garissa. Solar plants are known to be more environmentally friendly and have minimal operating and maintenance expenses compared to the traditional diesel stations.
