PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT
(Request for Information on un-electrified primary schools)
The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) commenced the National Public Primary Schools’ Electrification Project in July 2013, as part of the Jubilee Government’s flagship projects, to facilitate digital learning in public primary schools. The objective of this notice is to seek information from the public on any existing un-electrified public primary school.
When the project started the data available then indicated a total of 19,000 public primary schools. Since then more schools have been identified and the number currently stands at 23,375 public primary schools. Out of this number, a total of 22,249 schools have been fully electrified (18,074 through grid extension and 4,175 through installation of solar PV systems) while major construction work has been completed for 646 schools and are awaiting transformers and commissioning. Work is in progress for a further 247 primary schools but this has been affected by a shortage of line construction materials. Arrangements have been made to acquire the missing materials by around mid-July 2016 and they are expected to be completed by the end of August 2016.The final group of un-electrified schools comprise of 233 newly identified public primary schools and design work has been completed, construction contracts awarded and construction is scheduled to commence during the second half of July 2016.
REA appreciates the support from the Government by ensuring regular flow of funds to the Authority through the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum which has enabled the successful implementation of the project. At the completion of this project, a total of Kshs.35billion will have been spent. REA further appreciates the support and co-operation received from various stakeholders led by Members of Parliament during implementation of the project.
Please take note that if we do not receive any additional schools as indicated above and we complete the electrification of the 233 recently identified primary schools listed on our website, REA will then proceed to declare all primary schools in Kenya electrified.
