The Rural Electrification Authority, a state corporation established under the Energy Act No. 12 of 2006, is mandated to enhance provision of electricity in the rural areas of the country. It is also the lead agency in the development and promotion of renewable energy in Kenya. Through its mandate, the Authority seeks to improve the socio-economic well-being of Kenyans living in rural areas. Since commencing operations in the 2008/09 financial year, the Authority has endeavored to realize this objective and through its efforts, 70% of all the public facilities now have electricity. Moving forward, the Authority will put more focus on renewable energy to provide electricity to areas far away from the national grid network. The Authority is looking for experienced, highly motivated and results oriented individuals to fill vacancies in the organization. The applicants must be self-driven individuals who are focused and committed to driving the REA mandate. They will work with their departmental teams in spearheading/embracing innovations, work ethics and must possess high level of integrity.

Applications are invited from professionals who meet ALL the minimum qualifications for the following positions:


The General Manager will be in-charge of Renewable Energy, Construction and Design Departments and will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that all the designs and construction of grid extension projects are done efficiently and timely, within the acceptable industry standards;
  2. Provide advisory functions to the top management on all technical matters in the Authority;
  3. Be responsible for undertaking capacity building with other relevant institutions; partnering with relevant institutions in scaling the use of renewable energy and conducting research, development and dissemination of renewable energy technologies in collaboration with various institutions including adoption of best practices;
  4. Provide advisory to management on all matters relating to the development of renewable energy sources;
  5. Be responsible for carrying out of preliminary cost estimates for projects to be implemented, survey of projects being implemented; acquisition of way leave consents and preparation of technical design reports to be used during the construction phase of all projects;
  6. Oversee the implementation of grid extension projects all over the country, in an efficient manner. The job holder will also ensure that all projects are constructed as per the acceptable construction industry standards;
  7. Oversee project implementation through to commissioning;
  8. Ensure the promotion of the use of renewable energy sources including but not limited to small hydro, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hybrid systems.


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil, Electronics Engineering, or Renewable Energy or any other relevant Engineering Degree from a recognized Institution;
  2. Master’s Degree in a related field from a recognized Institution;
  3. Registered with Engineers Board of Kenya;
  4. Member of the Institute of Engineers of Kenya;
  5. Leadership or Management course is an added advantage;

Experience and Competencies:

  1. At least twelve (12) years’ of relevant work experience with at least 6 years at senior management level in a busy environment;
  2. Knowledge of the industry and energy sector;
  3. Decision making and problem solving skills;    
  4. Leadership skills;
  5. Communication skills;
  6. Analytical Skills;
  7. Demonstrated Integrity;
  8. Meets the requirements of chapter six of the constitution.
