Q

What do I need to do to get connected?

A

To get connected you need to do the following:

·  apply and pay the necessary connection charges to REA,

·  wire your premises using a licensed electrician

·  pay the meter deposit.

When you pay for electricity, how soon can you get connected?

A

If you pay when the project is under construction, REA ensures that you get electricity connection before the contractor leaves the project site.

 

Q

How do you measure six hundred metres from the transformer? 

A

Six hundred metres is measured as the distance between your premises and the nearest transformer following the viable access route.

 

Q

Is the connection charge the same irrespective of the distance from the transformer?

A

Yes, the cost of connection is the same as long as it is within  600m from the transformer and is categorized depending on the type of facility.

Can we pay the connection fee in installments?

A

Yes. You can apply to stagger payments over a period of ten (10) months after making initial payment of Ksh 5,000 and Ksh 10,000 for single phase and three phase respectively.

If the transformer is situated in my farm, can I be connected for free, because I will be ensuring its security? 

A

Yes, REA will waive the connection charges but you will be required to wire your premises, pay the meter deposit as well as your monthly consumption costs.

How do I upgrade from single phase to three phase? 

A

To upgrade to three phase, one needs to

·         fill an application form indicating the additional new load and rating,

·         pay for the applicable connection charges for converting the supply to 3 phase 

·         Rewire the premises and issue certificates

Can I get connected even if I am still paying a loan taken to enable me pay for connection? 

A

Yes you will get connected as you continue paying the loan and your monthly bill.

Can I get free connection if the line passes through my land? 

A

No. Construction of power lines is a cost intensive undertaking and the connection charge For R.E project is already heavily subsidized by the Government. Those within reach of a transformer are required to pay the connection charges which is a small cost compared to the cost of the project in order for them to be connected. Grant of wayleaves therefore is one of the contributions that beneficiaries make to enable power to get to their areas.
